Boxing Day Shooting

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 11:32

For those of you who haven’t heard, my current metropolis of Toronto is having a particularly rough year (relatively speaking) as far as gun violence. Earlier this week we hit what many consider to be the lowest point yet, when on Boxing Day, at one of the busiest retail intersections in the country, a number of worthless wastes of flesh opened fire into a crowd of shoppers.

I don’t want to pretend for a second that my little slice of interweb is the right place for current affairs; there are more than enough sources for people to hear or read more about the state of the world. This however does hit a little close to home, and so if any of you are curious about this event and how it relates to my city, here is a post to another Toronto blogger of far greater perseverence on this matter: “The Boxing Day Shooting” – by Joey deVilla a.k.a. Accordian Guy

If I can be permitted one mini rant on my own personal website without anyone bitching about politics or blame or excuses or any other ivory tower bullshit, let it be this: The world is a better place when scum like this are removed from it.

I hate that there is crap like this to talk about.

My Real Christmas Angel

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 14:43

Wow, 2 weeks can certainly fly by like a fart in a windstorm…

Well, I certainly hope you were able to enjoy the past few government-approved statutory non-work and/or work-optional days in whatever culurally appropriate manner you deemed fit for your own personal edification.

And if not, then as my dear friend Denis says: “Merry F#@$&*! Christmas!!

Personally, I spent Friday with my buddy Jon at Osama’s Homo-bortion Pot & Commie Jizzporium. Always a good time.

Saturday, after a heart-wrenching farewell in the early morning mists of Pearson Airport, I parted ways with my Dreamgirl and boarded a flight destined for clean air and snowy mountains.

After copious amounts of both family and food, I’m back in the office now, staring out at a grey, rain-soaked parking lot while pretending that I’m writing a paper about income fund accomodation. Of course the highlight of my life recently was the sight of my sweetie waiting to pick me up at the airport… nothing makes the stresses of holiday air travel disappear like a beautiful brunette running to my arms.

I may not have had a decent night’s sleep in over a week, I’ve been fighting with Rogers about the p.o.s. phone they sold me a couple months ago all day, and not one car on the road will drive faster than 10 under the limit… but dangit I’m in a great mood. How could I not be, with a woman like this in my life? There’s a reason I keep a picture of her on my desk, so I can remind myself of what beauty and joy the world really does have to offer.

Are You Sure You Are What You Think You Are?

Vote By Issue Quiz

See how you would vote on 12 major issues (with the “official” stances hidden), then see how your opinions/beliefs match up with the major parties.

Personally, I would have liked to see the Green Party in there, also I find it kind of strange that the Bloc was included, seeing as how their political opinions are somewhat irrelevant outside of Quebec. But it’s still an interesting exercise.

For the record, and just to keep things as confusing as possible, I “agreed with” the Conservatives, the Liberals, and the NDP on an equal amount of issues amoung them (ie: I agreed with the Cons on 10 issues, the Libs on 9, and the NDP on 9). I’m going to assume there’s some overlap.

Yikes, if my dad ever found out I agreed with the NDP on anything, he’d probably disown me!

Requiem For A Scarf

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 20:44

Once upon a time I had a scarf. The scarf I’m wearing in the picture, that the waves themselves are bowing down to.

This was a magic scarf that my impeccably fashionable paramour chose for me on a chilly autumn day in Stratford. Handmade by a local artisan out of the thoughts and dreams that trail behind men in love like a cloud as they wander through the streets of his village.

This was a perfect scarf. Just the right size, long enough to tie around any way I chose, and always the perfect temperature. Matched every outfit I wore, no matter the occasion. Every suit, every coat, every sweater or pair of jeans, from a casual walk on a windy beach to a boardroom presentation for million dollar clients.

It was a very special scarf.

Why am I telling you this?

Because at some point in the last 2 weeks… I LOST MY FREAKIN’ SCARF!!!!

IF ANYONE IN TORONTO OR KITCHENER-WATERLOO HAS SEEN MY SCARF, PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT:

My neck is naked and lonely… please help.

More Music With The Merry

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 09:34

Just when I think I’ve found my weird Christmas music fix for the season, here comes DJ Riko to offer up a whole new barrel of happy.

Oh yeah, he also did that Whistler’s Delight mix that all the cool people have been listening too…

Bring The Mix

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 12:01

I love this mash-up stuff: Q-Unit: Queen vs 50 Cent

It will take a lot to beat last year’s Indie Christmas album (second favourite Christmas album, nothing beats Boney M), and of course I’ve got my own personal mix, but Santastic just might come close!

The Post That Will Come Back To Haunt Me When I Want To Be Prime Minister

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 15:55

OK Steve, if you’re actually going to make me THINK this election…

How’d They Vote?

It’s pretty easy here folks… Find your riding, find your MP, take a look at how they voted in the past. Do you agree?

Honestly, I’m not the greatest candidate to talk about electoral participation. I’m generally so disgusted with the behaviour of our politicians that I find it very difficult to motivate myself towards involvement. In my opinion, our two major parties play so much alike, that there is very little discernable difference to the general public who is actually in power. They’ve both been caught with their hands in the cookie jar before, neither of them lives up to the promises they make during elections, the system is generally biased towards special interest groups who can afford to buy their politicians, who then proceed to make decisions favourable to their “supporters”.

I’m not impressed. I’m not amused. I have little faith. Just try watching 10 minutes of Parliament and tell me what would have happened to you if you had acted so poorly in grade 2. The system is screwed. Generation X at it’s best, baby, what do you really expect me to think?

However, as Doogie once said: “We’re in it for the species.”

I do vote. I do get involved. But I don’t delude myself into thinking that I’m trying to make a difference in the next 4 years. These people are on contract, you don’t trust long-term priorities to people who can walk away in 4 years with a pension and a smile.

Want to know who I vote for?

What’s your favourite colour?

Laugh at me all you want. Do I think they’re going to win the next election? Heck no!! Do I even think in their current form they could effectively govern Canada? Noooo way!

Would I like the powers-that-be, and the public-at-large, to see that there is a growing support for pro-environmental policies?

Do you think that there’s the slightest chance that, in the long run (the only race worth considering), those who wield the power might consider integrating some of those policies into their own mandates in order to remain in power?

If only 2%, or 5%, or 10% of the electorate openly offers their support to a party that will support their beliefs, then maybe some of those “fringe” beliefs can eventually make their way into the mainstream. I do not vote for the party I want to run the country for the next 4 years. I don’t vote for the MP I want to represent my neighbourhood. I definitely don’t vote according to what people SAY they believe in. I vote for what I believe in, and what I want for this country in the next 40 years.

Bottom line from a jaded Gen-X’er: Whether I vote or not, either the Liberals or the Conservatives will run the country. They’re both full of crap, and I don’t trust or believe either of them for a second. Two sides of the same jagged, rusty coin. The Greens know they won’t win the next election, so they can afford to speak their mind. I may not agree with everything they say, but at least I believe that THEY believe what they’re saying. Honesty in politics? I’ll take it wherever I can find it.

It Starts…

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 10:57

I refuse to start celebrating the Christmas “season” until December 1 at the earliest. Too much over-commercialization tends to bum me out, but I love the cheesey fun stuff. (In other words, Burl Ives rocks, Boney M rules… Jessica Simpson makes me want to shoot myself in the head with a candy-cane revolver.)

Last year I really let the negativity of the season get to me, but things are very different this year and I am really going to try and stay as positive as I can and focus in on how amazingly lucky I am. Awesome girlfriend, great friends, a job, my own apartment, wonderful family… and nearly a metre of snow waiting for me and Gracie (my snowboard) at Sunshine!!
