Vote Like A Nerd

“If you were shopping for a TV or a car, the first thing you’d do is watch the Sony/Panasonic debate on CBC. Then you’d go down to the local Denny’s where the head of Sony’s Canadian office was serving up pancakes and delivering a stump speech where she trashed Panasonic and accused them of shipping busted TVs. Then you’d listen to AM radio call-in shows and hear what Farmer Jim and Student Jane think. That’s how smart people spend their money. Right?”

Great stuff Steve.

The first person to tell me who all the people in my haiku are wins a copy of the work they are best know for. Or a cookie. Depending on how I feel.

    They Call Me Mike?

    Mifune, Miike
    Ishido, Kurosawa
    Sakaguchi… Dave

Yeah baby, that’s me getting my haiku on…

My best friend Dave is in the Land of the Rising Sun right now (Nagoya I believe), and I want to visit him. Some time over the next year. However, I currently, and for the forseeable future, suffer from the twin blades of “no money” and “no time”.

So here’s the deal. Next year (after RSP season, stupid work), I want to go to Japan. 5-10 days. I don’t care how I get there, I don’t need accomodations or any support once I arrive. $1000 or less. I’ll fly coach, heck I’ll fly cargo. I don’t care if the plane’s leaving that day, just give me enough time to swing home for my passport and make it through security. Let’s make this happen.

And when I arrive there, I’ll hitchhike from wherever I land to Nagoya, track down where Dave lives, and show up just in time to help him fight a gang of street toughs who corner him after he tried to rescue a young lady from their nefarious clutches. Just before they pounce on him he’ll say something like “I sure wish Mike was here!” and then I’ll charge in with a mighty battle cry and the two of us will defeat the foul criminals in a fashion befitting the best cheesy Martial Art movies of all time!

As the dust settles and the girl showers us with gratitude before running home, Dave will turn to me and ask “Where the hell did you come from?”, and I’ll say “I am wherever I am needed, for I am…….. Mike.”

And we’ll laugh, and head to the nearest bar for a beer, dismissively kicking the head of the one gang member still conscious as we leave the alley, walking into the neon lights like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne riding into the sunset.

Because my life really is like a movie, and sh!t like that happens to me all the time.

What Colour Is The Sky In Your World Tonight?

You just don’t see stuff like this here…

Calgary gets this crazy weather phenomena called a chinook, where in the dead of winter they can get a day of +20 degrees (Celsius) and some of the most breathtaking cloud effects.

Last night we had our first real snowstorm of the season here in Toronto. Not much (by an Alberta Boy’s standards), but enough to really screw with the traffic. Fortunately I’m bedridden, independantly wealthy, and live in an underground geothermal biosphere, so the snow doesn’t really get in my way too much.

    First Snow ’05!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mike Lawton @ 09:48

OK, it’s been KILLING me to know that my little slice of heaven has been open for like a week now, and had it’s best opening in years with a base of over 80cm, and it’s STILL snowing as I write this… and I’m sitting in a freakin’ cubicle in Toronto!!!

However, yesterday did bring the first snowfall of the season for this fair metropolis, and that always brings a smile to my face and a skip to my step, because it means that winter is starting, and I know that soon I will be hurling myself down a mountain covered in powdered white gold, strapped to a piece of wood and fiberglass.

And at that moment, I will once again know what it feels like to be truly alive.

You can not gaze upon the wonders of the valley until you have climbed the mountain and stepped to the cliff’s edge. Until that point, all you can do is sit on your rock, safe under the shade of your tree, and try to imagine what your world might be.

OK, blog template redesign is ALMOST done… just need to get a few of my links back up and mess around with every freakin brower I can find until I know that it will at least be readable in all of them!!

I swear, if this happens again, I’m going plain text all the way. Everyone can just use Lynx, and bite me.

    CC: Blog virgin

As I slowly introduce this angelic woman to the depths of my geekitude, I’m even, dare I say, corrupting her a little. She now has her very own blog, where surely it will be soon full of wonderous lamentations of romance and passion, stories of adventure, and challenges of both the mind and soul.

Or at least the occasional naked picture of me in a cowboy hat.
